Traveling Light

by Timothy Hagy

PARIS, July 1, 2005 - If there are endless ways of presenting clothing to editors and buyers, Gilles Rosier perhaps took the cake with a series of tableau vivant featuring models in bedroom settings, clad only in their white underwear, slowly dressing, posing for the cameras, then undressing to start the cycle all over again. The sight of buffed models in their skivvies was evidently too much for one overwrought German editor, whose shriek of delight was barely muffled by the soundtrack “Leaving on a Jet Plane”.

Traveling light was the theme of Rosier’s collection for Summer 2006, and despite the clunky presentation, which had more than one Fashionista rummaging through the wardrobe in hopes of actually seeing the clothes, several pieces stand out.

The elegant cut of a black evening suit, a two toned sweater worn with a tie, the silver studs woven into a scarf and a pair of pants inlaid with sterling were among the memorable flashes.

In an age of reduced budgets, perhaps alternatives to the runway are becoming frequent fliers. But it’s still worth remembering that a catwalk presentation is the best way of making sure your that work doesn’t drop off the radar screen.
