PARIS, February 28, 2006 - The Marithé and François Girbaud show was staged
beneath a backdrop of giant silver spheres suspended over a stage of ice-blue
lighting. Entitled "Ballroom on Ice", the sixty pieces that made up the
Winter 2006 collection were shown to a waltzing soundtrack. Flossy orange
tops gave way to splashes of fuchsia and plum, while a profusion of black
layering looked light as a feather.
The series of stetsons and fleece-lined cowboy jackets were less an allusion
to the movie Brokeback Mountain (as stated in program notes) than a
commercial gesture. As France's foremost fashion critic, Virginie Mouzat,
pointed out in her review for Le Figaro, the show was "aimed at America where
the company's fortune was made."
