new york autumn winter 07/08

Reem Acra
by Marilyn Kirschner

Reem was going after a feeling of "modern decadence" and the designer known for her simplistic designs translated into luxurious and sensuous fabrics, wanted to add a modern element to the cocktail dresses, evening separates, and gowns that she is known for. This season, she focused more on tailoring and sportswear but was also taken with the idea of art nouveau, which translated into velvet egg and cocoon shaped jackets (which were shown with pencil skirts), bejeweled accents and luxurious trims.

Rich jewel tones like emerald, ruby, and sapphire played off onyx and fabrics included silk charmeuse, velvet, silk chiffon, techno satin, metallic jacquard and jacquard taffeta. Intricate beading added drama and surface interest to several pieces, including a dark green silk chiffon all over beaded tunic which was paired with silk chiffon bias cut pants, and a beaded v neck shift dress.
