PARIS, January 27, 2008 - Kris Van Ascche did what Hedi Slimane thus far has not—he showed a women's collection with his men's line on Saturday afternoon. If he was trying to impress LVMH officials, who according to reports have him poised to accede the throne of Dior Homme, that may be in vain since Slimane is rumored to have at last negotiated a contract. When Van Ascche wasn't trying to make his boys look like girls by plopping a tiara on their heads or decorating their chests with multicolored pearls, he settled for a more subtle approach—white shirts embroidered with sequined butterflies. In stark contrast, the life preserver vests and lumber jack jackets veered too far off course in the other direction. It looked contrived. Rather than being a study on androgyny, the pieces revealed just how far Van Ascche has to go when it comes to refining his own style. The women's clothes were more succinct, but the silhouette was at times distorted by too much fringed overlay.
