Saint Laurent Men
By Timothy Hagy, Paris Editor

PARIS, January 28, 2007 - 'Casual elegance' seems to be the buzz word this season in Paris, as designers working for luxury labels have tried to navigate the channel between modern lifestyle and rich tradition, or "opulence" as Stefano Pilati described it. At Saint Laurent that translated into such exotic fare as a mink T-shirt, a knit sweater ribbed with crocodile skin motif, or a silver-lined cape tossed atop faux riding breeches. Do men really go fox hunting? Fur scarves and hoods foamed at the neck and satin trimmed velour jackets. Pilati tried hard to make his point, but still, the look was never quite convincing. Aside from being a hundred years too late with some of his ideas, the clothes were full of pretense.

The exquisite tailoring of a sleek trench and the less fussy tweed sports coats were a welcome diversion.
