Christian Lacroix February 28, 2007 - When Helen Mirren accepted her Oscar on Sunday night, she bore witness to the fact that Christian Lacroix's creations can accentuate the beauty of a woman of a certain age. Of course, the four million dollar brooch pinned to the back of the bustier didn't hurt either. Lacroix is a master at artistic effects, and though his ready-to-wear collections never rise to the plateau of his haute couture, Wednesday's show was nonetheless notable for its finesse. Grounded in a somber palette, the collection was meant, the designer said, to evoke Spanish and Flemish Renaissance paintings. Black ruled the catwalk — velour, satin, leather — embroidered and not. Short flared skirts looked more like bloomers, and the micro short hem line of some of the pieces was certainly not for the shy at heart.. As always, the jeweled accessories were as interesting as the clothes. One regal looking hairpin, a cameo surrounded by pearls, could have made the Queen swoon.  ;)
