A Fluttering of Fine Prints

PARIS, October 7 - One of the problems in being a living tradition is that it is notoriously difficult to find ways of inserting new juice into old wineskins. Leonard has a strong and faithful following of ladies who adore printed silk, though the challenge of looking different from 1985, or for that matter 1975, has recently beset the house.

In today's show, however, lots of fresh takes were on display, and among them the abstract prints that opened the collection deserve special mention. Those were followed by delicate oriental motifs set against a French blue background - a shimmering color that Jacqueline Kennedy once used to decorate her White House dressing room. The resulting combination gave an effect worthy of a fine oriental screen

The daywear was the strongest when concentrating on highly wearable slacks and print top combinations, or lovely skirts twirled with ribbons of print bands.

If some of the other pieces looked a little old hat, well then that irksome task of letting in some oxygen needed further study.
