Circa 1992, in an attempt to express her open minded approach to style in alternate ways, Miuccia Prada created Miu-Miu. Inspired by the unique mix of clothes in her wardrobe, Ms. Prada bestowed on her namesake a bohemian identity; incarnated by a ‘hand made in home-economics class’ look. Since then Miu-Miu has brought to the fashion forefront an eclectic mélange of clothes, played up by rough finishes, natural colors, and artsy-craftsy accents.

This season the Miu-Miu girl looks as if she has personally retailored a Sicilian widow’s hand-me-down clothes to fit her youthful needs. Massive fur collars, boxy loose-fit coats, flower appliqué A-line skirts, and suede patchwork capes (in rust and mustard colors)…all topped off by tulle handkerchiefs tied over the face; seemingly somber yet playfully naughty. Indeed, the secrets of this teen jokester are hidden in subtle details like patchwork and crochet adornments. At first sight, our protagonist may appear sad and perhaps even tragic, but her unconventional combining of opposites reveals that in all actuality she is just experimenting.

Miuccia’s creations for Miu-Miu may not be as ground-breaking as the designer’s Prada repertoire, but no doubt these are young, witty, crisp and fun garments that strike the perfect balance between grace and gentility.
