SUE WONG
By Sedef Kokcuoglu
LA, October 25 - This season Sue Wong’s infamous creations, distinct with intricately hand-embroidered details, elaborately beaded embellishments and sophisticated three dimensional appliqués, are infused with the mystique of far away lands.
For Summer 2005 Sue Wong fantasized exotically flamboyant, brazenly colorful and uniquely bohemian pieces that pay homage to the nomadic lives of Gypsies. In reference to her unlikely muses Wong exclaimed, "I find the gypsy culture to be completely mesmerizing! Their sense of personal, often dramatic style was expressed through their fashion." Indeed, the imaginative designer’s long semi-precious stone ornamented Bedouin slip gowns, devore multi-printed flamenco dresses, and butterfly tie-die slips with hanging ribbon streamers reflect the rich culture of these wandering peoples. However, it was not solely the magic of Andalusian gitannes that inspired Wong’s new collection. The sensual magnetism of Northern India and the delicate elegance of Parisian fashion in the 20s were other points of reference for Wong’s new collection.
In the end may it be the designer’s long, hand painted Maharini gowns adorned with hanging medallions, Victorian Seautache ribbon embroidered short jackets or lattice bodice dresses, Wong’s art revives the splendor, romanticism and impeccable craftsmanship of the by gone eras.
