Silky Lightness from Valentino
PARIS, October 10 - If the house of Valentino were compared to bottle of fine wine, it would doubtless be a well-cellared Romanée Conti, full of rich perfume that gives way to a long, silky afterglow.
Sunday's show was vintage Valentino, from the opening tableau of caramel candy satin daywear, to the finale of tiered chiffon skirts that seemed light and frothy enough to float.
The noble Roman couturier sent out his spring 2005 collection on a brick-red runway etched with the letters of his name.
As the daywear began to turn shimmering, one rose-colored jacket spelled out 'Valentino', though it was already obviously inscribed on an apple-green striped suit trimmed in mink, or a glittering skirt swirled with a floral imprint. Elsewhere, dresses stacked of tiers of gold lamé fringe gave way to evening gowns of gossamer chiffon. One split open like a mimosa blossom in full bloom; another chartreuse version wafted along the runway like the toga of a Roman goddess.
By the time Valentino took the runway, tanned and trim from a summer of yachting on the Mediterranean, the timeless beauty of his touch had already reverberated to a set of young French demoiselles, who insisted they wanted to buy every piece in the collection.
This was one of the lightest, though richest, collections yet from Sir Val of Rome.
