Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez, the 20 ‘something’ duo behind the label Proenza Shouler is the undeniable darlings of magazine editors (having just been recipients of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award). A recent trip to Mexico fueled their interest in the Arts and Crafts movement, which was evident this season in their reliance on rough and textural fabrics like burlap, and use of such details as crewel work and open embroidery.

Working within a mainly neutral and light color palette, with a bit of chartreuse, and some black, they put their signature corseted and bra tops on the back burner (though they were not completely gone) and concentrated more on longer narrow dresses with slightly rounded hips, sweet details like ruffled trim and puffed sleeves, narrow cropped pants, and their always stellar coats.

Standouts included their group of highly collectible embroidered linen coats (translated into shimmery chartreuse, ivory, or crisp white cotton trimmed with black) and shown over narrow cropped pants (which resembled leggings); a duo of chartreuse dresses, one with short puffed sleeves and ruffled trim, the other with a square neck and bare top; and their take on a tuxedo pantsuit: the pale lame cropped jacket ‘tuxedo’ jacket trimmed with mini ruffles, worn over a ruffled lame blouse with ecru linen cropped pants.
