Tulle
We Meet Again By Christine Suppes
Paris, July 6--To celebrate the 100 th birthday
year of Christian Dior, John Galliano re-created the career of the
designer who gave us the “New Look” in
1947. Utilizing miles and miles of tulle under sequined corsets, he referenced
Peru for the classic Dior nipped waist and Les Sylphides for well---the
tulle. The overall effect seemed Impressionistic, a soft mélange
of dreams, distant lands and fleeting sexuality, done up a la Paris.
What to take from this dream? For the lucky couture client, perhaps the
beautiful embroidered corsets which would enhance any well dressed woman’s
closet. Suzy Menkes of the International Herald Tribune reported that
Bernard Arnault, the boss of LVMH cried at the finale of the show. This
might have been the biggest dream of all. Galliano’s Dior contract
is up soon, and with so many reptile handbags on the arms of the couture
clients, let’s hope Arnault’s emotion wasn’t just crocodile
tears.
