Wednesday was also the showing of Richard Chai’s spring line. Now in his second year, this young designer who worked for Marc Jacobs and designed for TSE has gained recognition because of his obvious talents. Known for his signature cartridge pleating, origami insets, use of French seams, and obi like wide belts, he continued to evolve his philosophy with a soft color palette marked by chalk, white, sky, khaki, and cream played off mauve, cyclamen and citron. Noteworthy are his fresh takes on tailored suits and coats, many of which feature white silk piping or hand pick stitching (like the chalk cotton/linen classic jacket with hand stitching worn over a chalk cotton hopsack and voile skirt, or the moss washed silk/viscose belted trench) Dresses also bore his subtle yet distinctive techniques and the khaki and cyclamen washed silk/viscose taffeta front tie shirtdress with slightly raised waistline was a standout. For evening, Swarovski black diamond crystals delicately traced and decorated silk tulle and origami tops, and dresses.
