Dirk Schönberger Gets the Recipe Right
by Timothy Hagy
PARIS, July 3, 2005 - Dirk Schönberger knows how to throw a reception. Cold
flutes of Piper Heidsick champagne greeted guests to his show, as they milled
around a shaded terrace outside the Hôtel St. James & Albany off the Rue
Saint Honoré. The heat of a sultry Sunday afternoon dissipated as quickly as
the disorganization that plagues many fashion events became a distant memory.
The title of Schönberger’s collection for Summer 2006 “Vive La Bourgeoisie”
was reflected in any number of shimmering pieces sent down a runway sparkling
like new fallen snow. Spencers, ties, jackets and shorts all glittered
beneath the lights. Add in a redingote cut to sartorial splendor, mix in a
classy suit, and you have the secret recipe for a gentleman’s wardrobe. One
shirt came with a built in bow tie, while elsewhere silver brooches, purses
and money bags acted as ornaments.
The finale of evening wear featured sprays of silver rectangles strewn over
the shoulders, and tuxedos highlighted by peaked satin lapels.
Ah the dolce vita.
